Hidden Safari

Description:
For this project, students were asked to pick out an image of a cartoon animal. To fit the safari theme, I chose a lion. Next, students were asked to flip their image upside down, and draw the cartoon on a separate sheet of paper with a blue colored pencil. This method of drawing allows for a shift in focus, as the artist is not focusing on the whole picture at once, but the details that create it. Once the drawing is finished, the students will draw designs all over their paper with colored pencils (warm colors). This will "hide" their animal. Students will then make their safari glasses (made from red plastic) to view their drawing. Finally, the students will write three "clues" about their animal for the viewer.

Extension Activity:
This project could be integrated into a science lesson. As students learn about different habitats and animals, this could be a great tool for engagement. For example, students could choose an animal, conduct research, and use this project as a way to present their findings.
