Printmaking

Description:
For this project students can learn about printmaking and famous printmaking pieces, such as the Great Wave. First, students are asked to brainstorm and create three thumbnail sketches of different symbols that represent them. Once this is finished and they have chosen one symbol for the project, draw their symbol and carve it into a foam piece. Once the foam piece is carved, students will color it using watercolor markers. Finally, students will dampen watercolor paper with water, wipe it down, and press/roll their foam piece face down on top. They will repeat these steps to create their second print.

Extension Activity:
This project could be integrated into a language arts lesson. As the teacher could build off of the symbolize. Students could write about their symbol, what it means to them, and how it represents them.
